    • Isle of Dogs

      DIRECTOR: Wes Anderson
CAST: Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban
It's an absolute delight to see Wes Anderson return to stop-motion animation. 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' was easily our favorite stop-motion film of the decade so far. In 'Isle of Dogs', a Japanese boy goes looking for his dog after all dogs have been quarantined on a remote island. Doesn't sound like your average Anderson, which makes it all the more interesting. Directed by Sylvain Chomet (Les Triplettes des Belleville) and based on a script by Jacques Tati, 'The Illusionist' is a wonderfully realized, nostalgic little gem about an elderly French illusionist traveling to Scotland in the 1960's. • The Wind Rises

      DIRECTOR: Hayao Miyazaki
CAST: Hideaki Anno Hidetoshi Nishijima Miori Takimoto

'The Wind Rises' was supposed to be legendary Japanese directors' Hayao Miyazaki swan song. It isn't, thankfully. 'The Wind Rises' is yet another beautiful chapter in the rich history of the Ghibli Studios, even though the film is significantly different from the weirder stuff they are known for. It tells the (fictionalized) biographical story of Jiro Horikoshi, a famous Japanese designer of several aircrafts. Read more

Studios like Disney, Pixar and Ghibli are taking the art of animated movies to a higher level every year. They continue to be among the highest grossing movies in the box office each year, and then we are not even counting the merchandise. At the time of writing Frozen was released years ago, but you can't walk into a store without seeing Frozen magazines, cups and cookies etc. It's a business, and it's big business. But fortunately it's a business that produces something that makes people happy, and the not so subtly hidden moral codes, are not too bad for our children either. These are the ones we think are the prettiest, smartest and most compelling.
