Downton Abbey
CREATOR: Julian Fellowes CAST: Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith & Michelle Dockery A portrayal of an aristocratic British family and their staff, beginning at the years before the first world war. BBC’s Downton Abbey is an enormous success – you’ve probably seen it, or at least heard of it. The decadence of the Crawley family is simply nice to look at, as are the shenanigans a level below (the staff) and the relationships between the family and their personnel. Yes, most characters are one-dimensional, and the fights and struggles are simplistic. No one really cares, apparently. Neither do we. RATING: 87/100

History is always better told in tv shows than in cinema, because you really do need more time to tell something properly or really get the gist of the atmosphere in that period. It's also for that reason that period dramas are rather rare. Because they have to nail how a certain period of time looked and felt, it is pretty expensive. Nonetheless, the genre is popular, like the best watched British costume drama Downton Abbey has shown us, so studios are not too afraid to invest in something special. Netflix has never spend as much as on The Crown.
