  • Praia Do Futuro

    DIRECTOR: Karim Aïnouz
CAST: Wagner Moura Clemens Schick Jesuíta Barbosa
Not all of of the Globo guys turned their backs completely on arthouse. It seems that Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, being featured in much of the atrocity above and on Globo, tried to change the course of his career a bit. In 2014, he collaborates with Karim Aïnouz, who already cooperated a couple of times with Marcelo Gomes, whose film Era Uma Vez Eu, Verônica (2012) is featured below in our top list. A flashy, experimental and promising looking Praia do Futuro tells the LGBT story of a life saver who rescues only one half of a gay couple to replace the other half in the end. We follow the two main characters and lovers move from Brazil to Berlin and how things play out at the other side of the ocean. Comparisons have been made with Audiard, Antonioni and Denis, which makes me even more longing to see it. Read more

  • Tropicalia

    DIRECTOR: Marcelo Machado
    CAST: Gilberto Gil Caetano Veloso
This film documents an important part of Brazilian music history in the 60’s when traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms of Samba and Bossa Nova intermingled with the psychedelic electric guitars of British Invasion acts like The Beatles and Rolling Stones. Because of censorship, the ‘tropicalista’s’ had to be creative in the writing of their material which often resulted in absurd lyrics. Famous bands of this new artistic movement were Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, etc. Fernando Meirelles, known for his critically acclaimed City of God (2002), produced this lovely and highly informative documentary. • Raul – O Início, o Fim e o Meio

    DIRECTOR: Walter Carvalho, Leonardo Gudel
CAST: Paulo Coelho Daniel de Oliveira Tárik de Souza
One of the best musical artists and lyricists Brazil has ever known is sadly enough only little known outside of the country. His songs are so full of absurd and inventive imagination, showing off the creative brilliance of him and his co-writer Paulo Coelho, who went on to become a bestselling author later on. Comparable to Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues, Raul’s lyrics are chock full of intriguing words, mostly even more confusing for the censuring authorities than Tropicália. And during singing them on concert, he usually has got still extra stories to tell in-between. The documentary tracks his life, his successes and his problems with drugs (as usual) and has some really impressive images of the hero in action. If you’re in for some art rock, definitely make sure you listen to his masterpiece classic album Krig-ha, Bandolo! (1973). Read more

- Best Brazilian TV Series out in 2024 & 2023 on Netflix & on TV Related: Best new Argentine movies in 2024 & 2023 (Netflix, Prime, Hulu & Cinema List) Given its vast size and impressive cultural tradition, it is needless to say Brazil has an enormously long and rich cinema tradition. With so much quality to pick, it is easy to come up with a list a must-see titles! Brazil has always been a melting pot of different cultures and that is reflected in Brazilian art. The best new Brazilian films of this year will let you discover how westernized Brazilians actually are and how they suffer from the same problems as us Europeans or Americans. To me, a lot of Brazilian cities resemble Italian ones, like for instance Napoli. They embody a hot climate, a lot of colors, lots of people and chaos in the streets and apartment blocks surrounded by fences that isolate the rich from the ‘dangerous’ poor. Despite some sourness in that respect, I love the atmosphere in Brazil and Brazilian films. Let’s hope the Copa do Mundo does not ruin too much.

Be attentive, don’t think all Brazilian films guarantee quality. Some are horrendously bad and most of those are produced by commercial television station Globo. They suffer from ‘telenovela’ actors delivering unrealistic, melodramatic and poor performances, unsuccessfully copying acclaimed indie films, too much unnecessary and unattractivily done sex scenes, superficial cultural references and lack of depth in characters. Avoid the following ‘Globo Filmes’: Faroeste Caboclo (René Sampaio, 2013), Flores Raras (Bruno Barreto, 2013), Paraísos Artificiais (Marcos Prado, 2012), Xingu (Cao Hamburger, 2012), A Busca (Luciano Moura, 2012) and off course big box office hit of a couple of years ago: Tropa de Elite 2 (José Padilha, 2010). Filmmaker Padilha went remarkably from the lovely honest little documentary Ônibus 174 (2002) to directing Hollywood blockbuster and moneymaker RoboCop (2014).
