The Worst of 2016: Films That Didn’t Live Up To High Expectations

The Light Between Oceans (Derek Cianfrance)

Why we didn’t like it: Cianfrances’ debut film ‘Blue Valentine’ was an achingly beautiful portrait of a disintegrating relationship.  ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ didn’t manage to stir us up however. For his new project, an adaptation of a best-selling novel, we gave him the benefit of the doubt. But alas, ‘The Light Between Oceans’ turned out to be an overly sentimental melodrama, drowning in a string-heavy soundtrack. Even actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, starring as the unfortunate lighthouse keepers couple, couldn’t save this project.
