The Worst of 2016: Films That Didn’t Live Up To High Expectations

Midnight Special (Jeff Nichols)

Why we didn’t like it: Jeff Nichols is really one of America’s most interesting directors right now. ‘Take Shelter’ was a disquieting portrait of a man who believes the world is coming to an end. ‘Mud’ was a heartwarming Mark Twain-esque coming-of-age drama.Unfortunately, his fourth feature ‘Midnight Special’ is kind of Spielberg gone wrong. A messy  sci-fi drama about a boy with supernatural powers, hounded by the government, religious freaks and aliens. Thank God Nichols directed two movies in 2016!
