20th Century Women
(United States, directed by Mike Mills)
American independent cinema has always been obsessed with dysfunctional families. Writer/director Mike Mills is too; his previous film Beginners evolved around a man and his elderly father who has just come out of the closet. 20th Century Women is a sun-drenched dramedy about a teenage boy in the late 70’s being raised by three strong-willed women. What sets Mills aside from numerous other indie filmmakers, is that his films are autobiographical; you can feel the love for and the authenticity of his characters.
