2018 in Film: the 15 best movies of the year

The Guilty

(Denmark, directed by Gustav Möller)

Admittedly, we have seen a fair share of ‘one actor, one setting’ movies the last couple of years. Think of Colin Farrell in a phone booth, Ryan Reynolds in a coffin or Tom Hardy in a car. ‘The Guilty’ evolves around a police officer handling phone calls at the 911 emergency centre. Right before the end of his shift, a woman calls who appears to be kidnapped. Now what? Where other movies following similar formulas sometimes feel artificial, this well-written, minimal movie keeps you at the edge of your seat for the entire run time.
