Free State of Jones (Gary Ross)

Why we didn’t like it: No one is as great in portraying steadfastly badasses with a thick Southern accent as Matthew McConaughey. So director Gary Ross asked the right guy for ‘Free State of Jones’. But unfortunately a well-casted actor can’t save a poor script. The film starts pretty interesting; a deserted Civil War soldier decides to start his own mini-state with a bunch of misfits, freed slaves and communists avant la lettre. Why fight a fight that isn’t theirs? But then the Civil Wars comes to an end, and the film unfortunately doesn’t.
