The Worst of 2016: Films That Didn’t Live Up To High Expectations

American Pastoral (Ewan McGregor)

Why we didn’t like it: Being admirers of the actor Ewan McGregor, we were pretty excited to hear he was about to direct his first film. His choice to adapt Philip Roth’s great novel ‘American Pastoral’ was a bold one; unfortunately, none of Roth’s books has been turned into a satisfying movie yet. And regrettably, McEwan didn’t do the trick either. Roth’s novel is a powerful and nuanced tale of a successful All-American Dad dealing with his radicalizing daughter in the 1960’s. McGregor, who also stars as the protagonist, turned it into something clunky.
