The (almost) definitive 2016 round-up: 23 movies that truly stood out this year

Manchester by the Sea

In terms of cinematic atmosphere Kenneth Lonergan is one of our favorite filmmakers. His never completely finished Margaret (2011) was a troubled project distribution-wise, but a masterpiece of modern New York’s cinema. After 5 years he has now returned with the buzziest film at film festivals, Manchester by the Sea starring Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck. Affleck plays the part of a brooding taciturn handymen who reluctantly becomes the legal guardian of his nephew. A truly impressive drama.
