Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev isn’t exactly known for his light-heartedness. You don’t get to be named the ‘Ingmar Bergman of our times’ for no reason after all. His latest feature film won’t change that reputation, even though it’s probably his most accessible work. Loveless is a visually overwhelming, glacial thriller about a troubled Russian couple being forced to ‘co-operate’ after their sensitive 12-year old son has disappeared. The way Zvyagintsev portrays modern-day selfishness and superficiality is unsurpassed.
