It’s a Wrap: The 20 Best Movies of 2017

The Beguiled

(United States, directed by Sofia Coppola)

Ever since Lost in Translation (2003), Sofia Coppola has been heralded as the leading lady of American indie cinema. But in all honesty, it has been a while since she directed a truly great movie; both Somewhere (2010) and The Bling Ring (2013) were somewhat underwhelming. The Beguiled, a remake of the classic 1970’s Southern Gothic flick, is a true return to form thankfully. The story of a wounded Civil War soldier recovering in an isolated Virginian girls’ institute has all the classic Coppola ingredients; it’s dreamy, erotic and visually lush.
