Thelma
(Norway, directed by Joachim Trier)
Joachim Trier’s Oslo, 31. august (2011) is an all-time favorite here at The Vore. And honestly, we were a tad disappointed when Louder Than Bombs, his first American production, came out. Sure, Trier’s sensitive style was still recognizable, but in many ways, it felt like that movie had been done a thousand times already. With Thelma, Trier returned to his native Norway AND to his old form. Vaguely reminiscent of Brian De Palma’s Carrie, it tells the story of a devout Christian student discovering both her lesbian tendencies and telekinetic powers. This might sound like a stretch from his earlier Norwegian films, but believe me, it’s not.
