It’s a Wrap: The 20 Best Movies of 2017

Okja

(South Korea, directed by Joon-ho Bong)

After the critically acclaimed Snowpiercer, South Korean director Joon-ho Bong returns with another whimsical hybrid of a movie. Okja takes place in the near future. Mija is a young Korean girl taking care of a genetically modified animal. When the multinational company that designed the animal knocks on her door to recollect it, a chain of events is set in motion. Okja works on many levels; as a sweet family movie about a young girls’ love for her pet, as a nagging satire on corporate culture, but most of all, as a powerful statement against the meat industry.
