First Reformed

(United States, directed by Paul Schrader)

Ethan Hawke is really good at playing a laid-back, man-child you easily sympathize with. Think of ‘Boyhood’ or, more recently, ‘Juliet Naked’. In ‘First Reformed’, he portrays a man who would be on the complete opposite spectrum. Reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s austere cinema, this subtle and somewhat cold (in a good way!) movie depicts a detached priest struggling with his beliefs after one of his parishioners commits suicide. A movie that will slowly creep under your skin.
