Summer of Soul
The Harlem Culture Festival was a big event of 1969. The festival, held in Mount Morris Park, was a major moment in the African-American culture for featuring musical performances by Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension, The Staple Singers, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Blinky Williams, Sly and the Family Stone and the Chambers Brothers. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s because the event was filmed but rarely highlighted in pop culture. This documentary directed by Questlove features plenty of previously unseen footage from the event with interviews from those who were there.
