Too Late to Die Young

(Chili, directed by Dominga Sotomayor Castillo)

Taking place around 1990, shortly after the Chilean dictatorship ended, this dreamy, sun-drenched coming-of-age drama is the perfect summer film. Protagonist Sofia is a 16-year old girl living in a hippie-ish commune on the edge of city. We follow her during the days leading up to a New Year’s Eve party. She longs for love, for the recognition of her mother, for adult life in general. Nothing new, but when it’s executed with so much eye for detail, movies like these can still blow you off your socks.
