Closing the Decade: the 15 Best Movies of 2019

Vox Lux

(United States, directed by Brady Corbet)

Celeste witnessed a school shooting a la Columbine when she was 15 year-old, wrote a song about it that resonated with the world and became a Lady Gaga-like pop star. Starting from this idea, Brady Corbet made a riveting portrait of a deeply troubled pop singer unlike anything you’ve seen. Natalie Portman, who portrays the older Celeste, is absolutely at the top of her game here. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, and it is true that it might not be anyone’s cup of tea, but we were intrigued from the very first second.
