5. Mildred Pierce (2011)
Created by Carter Burwell
During the Great Depression, a mother of two children finds herself separated from her husband and faces the challenge of taking care of her family. She opens her own restaurant while trying to earn the respect of her oldest daughter.
Mildred Pierce looks like a play. This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not well acted, but this fact results in the perception of the series as being a bit unnatural. The screenplay can be dull, as well is the backdrop of the twenties. Compared to Boardwalk Empire, for example, which takes place in the same timeframe, the show doesn’t succeed in making the historical context fully believable. That being said, this series is not a huge disappointment, since the story and theme are well taken care off. There are good shows and bad ones; Mildred Pierce tends to the good side.
Upcoming mini-series
Two years ago, the news got out that Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks teamed up for a new WWII- mini-series. The show will be the third in line, after the successes of Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010). A release date hasn’t been set yet, chances are it will air in 2015.
